Charming traditional cottage with an 'old fashioned' feel but full amenities including central heating. The area is superb for walking (dogs welcome!) and close to both the sea and the Lake District.

Overview

Idylic stone-built, slate-roofed traditional country cottage, containing owner's pictures, books and antique furniture. Well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, full central heating, gas log-effect stove, small garden (not enclosed) with outside furniture.

This is not a modern 'slick and aseptic' cottage so be prepared to meet spiders (chuck them out!) and deer who nibble the plants (shoo them away!). It is a bit of a marmite experience - you will hate it or love it!!

There is parking for one car.
Virginia Cottage is NOT suitable for children under 12 years old.

The immediate area is very rural, with just the road that leads to the farm and three other stone-built cottages nearby. The village of Silverdale is no more than a 10 minute walk away - either along the road, or much better, across the fields. There is a Co-op store (open until 10 pm), a butcher, a chemist, and other shops as well as an excellent hotel/pub. There are many walks from the cottage that explore the local woods, shoreline and crags. The village boasts bowling (Crown Green), golf and bellringing.
Further afield the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are within easy motoring distance. The nearest town is Carnforth with a decent supermarket (Booths) and other stores, vets and doctors surgeries. There are numerous attractions in the immediate are including the RSPB reserve, Wildlife Oasis, Levels Hall, Sizergh Castle (NT)

For many years I lived in the heart of the Lake District where I worked as Regional Land Agent for the National Trust. I established, and for 16 years ran, a passenger boat business on Coniston Water. I am now retired from serious work and write poetry and (so far unpublished!!) novels. I live part of my life in northern Greece (Thessaloniki and Sithonia) and bought Virginia as my English bolt-hole. When not using it myself I let it, partly to defray the expenses of house ownership, and partly so that others can enjoy this delightful old cottage in a wonderful corner of England. As Old Age beckons I have perforce abandoned strenuous walking on the High Fells and find that the rolling countryside of Silverdale is ideal for me. It is also excellent countryside for dogs. For many years I owned Flatcoated Retrievers, surely one of the very best breeds of dog, but sadly my itinerant lifestyle now precludes canine ownership. I like to think that my visitors enjoy this very personal cottage of mine - it is far from the a-septic holiday cottage that has become the norm. However if you would prefer to give my pictures, books, and old furniture a miss, and if you do not want to share your holiday with the occasional passing spider, wandering woodlice, or marauding deer then it would be best for you to look elsewhere - that way we will both remain happy.
