Phoenix Retreat Luxury Villa, Sri Lanka
Beach villa with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and private pool in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka
From £1,005 per week
Immersed in nature, a luxury serviced villa in the colonial style, with huge infinity edge pool set on the lagoon and flanked by jungle, just 8 minutes inland from lively Hikkaduwa.
Overview
Inside you will find lofty, light filled interiors, enhanced by contemporary bespoke furniture and the bold use of colour from furnishings sourced in Colombo’s fashionable districts.
The original oil paintings that adorn every room are all the work of the talented local artist from Hikkaduwa.
The ornate wood carvings and signs are the work of a gifted local wood carver, also from Hikkaduwa.
High ceilings and natural airflow keep the villa cool, sustained by the natural cement floors. There are a/c units in all three bedrooms and ceiling fans throughout the property.
The downstairs veranda and upstairs balcony are covered, to provide shade from the midday sun or shelter from the occasional tropical rainshowers.
Outside is a huge 14m x 8m swimming pool next to the veranda and surrounded by lush gardens.
The cabana within the grounds is also a peaceful oasis with pond, water feature and two hammocks; an ideal place for relaxing, listening to the waterfall and wildlife in the gardens. Monitor lizards, iguanas, porcupine, mongoose, chipmonks and leaf monkeys visit the garden by day; while fruit bats fill the skies at dusk.
Sit on the jetty on the lagoon itself and you will encounter abundant and extraordinary wildlife with parakeets, kingfishers, cormorants ,sea eagles and mynah birds that roost in the jungle bordering the lagoon. The local fishermen dot the landscape at dawn and at dusk to lay their nets and return for their catch. They may offer you fresh lagoon prawns at the jetty, but you can try you hand at fishing off the house paddle boat or off the jetty
The villa is serviced by staff who provide security and safety, grounds and pool maintenance, cleaning and bed sheet and towel changes, all within the price of your stay.

Stayed about a week A little slice of jungle heaven. what a beautiful villa. nestled in a quiet, picturesque part of what essentially is the jungle, this villa is a treat for the senses. we were greeted by a huge monitor lizard in the garden, not you're everyday garden guest. then every day we experienced more diverse and wonderful wildlife. we saw, snakes, bats, eagles, scorpion, monkeys and so much more. the villa itself is super clean, huge and so pretty. the pool is the crowning glory, huge, deep, a fabulous temperature, you'll love it. Channa the housekeeper and his family are wonderful and leave you wanting for nothing. Hikkaduwa is a short Tuk Tuk ride away and is a bustling town with fantastic restaurants. you have to try the traditional Sri Lankan curries at the Two Brothers palace, genuinely one of the best curries we've ever had. the people in Sri Lanka are always smiling, happy and genuinely friendly. we loved our stay and we would highly recommend this villa to anyone. awesome place.
Stayed with kids Amazing stay at the retreat. Both Channa and his brother Sanji went out of their way to look after us and make sure trip was effortless. Breakfast everyday was a great addition cooked by the brilliant Channa who our kids loved. Thanks for the great long weekend.
Stayed over a week This place was special. The space. The pool. The lagoon. The wildlife. And most importantly Channa and his wonderful family made our two weeks there a dream. He and his brothers were so responsive and helpful when we needed anything, anytime, and set up so many fun excursions that let us experience the beauty of Sri Lanka. His wife made us the most delicious breakfasts and dinners we had during our whole stay, and they were both so great with our toddlers, who had a blast. I can't recommend this place enough, and we can't wait to visit again!
Stayed about a week We had an amazing time at the villa. Very spacious with a lot of space and a nice pool area to hang out as a group. The highlight was the wonderful couple — house manager Channa and chef Muthu who took very well care of us and always happy to help arrange transportation and activities.
Stayed a few nights Such a nice place, highly recommended! And Channa, who's assisting, is amazing, makes the whole stay much better!
Stayed a few nights Great week at this retreat! Channa and his wife were incredible house keepers, always ready to help, cooking great diners and providing valuable advices. The place is beautiful, surrounded by nature and plenty of wild animals. I strongly recommend. It is really worth it.
Stayed a few nights Phoenix Retreat is a beautiful and well-located property, perfect for a relaxing holiday. The place looks exactly like in the photos - everything is well maintained and clean. The pool is stunning and we spent a lot of time in the pool and by the lakeside. The host, Philippa, is organised and prompt in her responses, and Channa, the property manager, is one of the kindest people we’ve met and he took care of every small and big need on our holiday. We also highly recommend to try his wife’s simple Sri Lankan cooking during the stay. Overall, this villa was the perfect place to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday with a few close friends!
Stayed with kids A real gem nestled in nature. We had a great stay and were well looked after. There was everything we needed as a familt with young kids (cot, high chair etc). The setting is so peaceful and full of wildlife. We frequently saw monkeys which was entertaining. There are creepy crawlies but that's all a part of being in such a natural setting. Thanks for a lovely week.
Stayed a few nights The house and the garden was lovely. Both the pool and the house was big and spasious. We loved every minutes of staying her. Channa, the host, was extremely helpfull and tok good care of us. Both him and his hole family was lovely people and make us feel very welcome and gave us a great introduction to Sri Lanka. Channa and his brothers helped us with all the excursions we wish for. His wife, a sweet soul, made us tastefull dinners that was much better than at the restaurants. I highly recomend you ask for dinner in the house. We could not asked for a better host. We could not have asked for a better house and host.
We have a lovely stay at the retreat, the property is right out of a post card! The host as well as the caretakers at the property at extremely helpful and kind. Thank you :)
Stayed a few nights We had a great time at the villa. The house and the pool are enjoyable, being situated near the lake with beautiful surrounding. Channa is a really nice and easily accessible host. When we didn’t feel like going out he delivered us food from the restaurant of our choice. The villa is situated little too far for a walk to the town, but with tuk tuk it’s like 10 min drive and 2-3$ cost and Channa also organized the driver. Sincerely recomended.
Stayed a few nights The place and pool were incredibly beautiful, you feel at home from the first second! Everything was clean and available as described in the listing. The manager Channa and his wife are super sweet, he likes to chat with you and is always ready to help if you need anything! We would definitely come back!
Stayed over a week We had a wonderful 5-week stay here. The location in the jungle next to the lake meant monkeys and monitor lizards in the garden and we loved it! The setting was beautiful, the pool was well kept and the house fit our needs. The best thing BY FAR about our entire trip was the amazing house manager Channa. Nothing was too much trouble, he was beyond helpful. Our children (and we!) adored him, and he went above and beyond every single day we were there. He was so accommodating, helpful and kind. He spent loads of time with our kids and drove us all over Sri Lanka. He knew every hotel, restaurant, beach and activity that we could have wanted to go to and made the arrangements for us. Even if the place were a dump (it certainly isn't) we would definitely be going back for Channa.

We are a husband and wife team, from Lincoln in the UK We first came to Sri Lanka in September 2009 and was instantly charmed by the people, their culture and the fantastic natural landscape. It felt like “coming home”. We decided to build a holiday home for us and our extended family, began our search for land in 2010, completed our purchase and met an architect in 2011 and our sketch plan ideas became a reality and the build of The Retreat completed in 2012. We have been in business in the holiday rental sector since November 2013. Formerly, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, we re branded as The Phoenix Retreat in 2020, after the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 forced us to close our doors and consider what the future might hold. We were one of the first privately owned villas to obtain accreditation, with merit, from the Sri Lanka Tourist Board, a requirement to reopen, after the pandemic. We have faced many challenges and staff changes, but our reviews speak for themselves.
