Cueva Alfano is a beautiful Andalucían cave home situated in the countryside 2kms outside of Freila, a typical village in the Granada province of Southern Spain. Surrounded by olive groves and almond trees, the cave and area are ideal for lovers of the great outdoors and those looking for a peaceful, comfortable retreat from modern life. You will be able to relax outside the cave looking at the mountain of Jabalcon and enjoying the peace of this lovely location. Cueva Alfano is close to four natural parks and is only 5 minutes away from the beautiful Lake Negratin. Spend your days walking, star-gazing, cycling, exploring by car or enjoying the tranquility of the lakeside with good restaurants, swimming, pedaloes and fishing.

Due to the rural location car hire is essential to appreciate the area fully.
The cave comprises of a large farmhouse style family kitchen with a wood burning stove, a large table and seating for up to 6 people. A snug living room with seating, TV and DVD player. Bathroom with large shower, twin basins, wc and bidet and washing machine.

Bedroom 1 with double bed, wardrobe and small chest of drawers.
Bedroon 2 with twin beds.
Small sitting room / bed room area with single bed and bed side table.

Outside is a large covered terrace area with seating for up to 6 people and barbeque area.

Bathroom towels and bed linen provided. Property cleaned and linen changed once a week on stays of more than a week. Please bring your own beach towels.

The Area
In a traditional cave house like Cueva Alfano, holiday accommodation anywhere else simply couldn't give you the same kind of experience as you'll be guaranteed of when you choose this authentic and unique style of holiday rental in Spain - cave houses in Freila being found with all the peaceful seclusion you would expect half-way up a rugged hillside surrounded.by.olive grows. In the village of Freila there are two small supermarkets, a butchers, bakers, fishmongers, post office, bank and pharmacy and various tapas bars/restaurants in the village.

We are also close to the market town of Baza where there are plenty of shops and large supermarkets. Cueva Alfano would therefore suit anyone with a love of the great outdoors as this village is located in an area positively bursting with outstanding natural beauty, much of which is protected within the boundaries of no less than four national parks, including Sierra de Baza - also putting you within easy reach of the beautiful Lake Negratin and the thermal baths at Zujar.

With such a diversity of natural environments this north-eastern corner of the Province of Granada is surrounded by the verdant valleys, limestone gorges, pine forests and tranquil lakes that make this such an attractive region to anyone looking for a complete contrast to the busy beach resorts of neighbouring Costa Almeria - Cueva Alfano being just as unique as the countryside in which it is found, where you'd be more likely to find a traditional cave house in the Freila area than the more usual option of a villa rental. In Granada, holiday cave houses are something of a novelty to many visitors but are in fact a cultural and historical icon, if not a regional speciality to the Freila area - cave house rentals being found in rural locations like Zujar, Bacor and Cortes de Baza, as well as many other ancient towns and villages that are scattered throughout this scenically breathtaking part of Granada. Cueva Alfano not only makes the ideal base for exploring the spectacular landscapes of this part of the region on foot, by mountain-bike or on horse-back, but if you have a passion for the fascinating cultural heritage of Andalucia, Cueva Alfano couldn't be more appropriate for an authentic experience of this typically rustic style of holiday home accommodation in Granada.

The cave house was just outside the village but in a great place with views. The area has plenty to see & do.We went out everyday for walks, most were from the book the owners had in the cave house for things to do & places to visit. We had lovely weather for feb & had a b.b.q everynight while sat outside. The bed was the best ive slept in & the room was so dark we slept in every morning.Thank you Alison for letting us stay....

We stayed for 2 weeks and didnt want to leave. The kids adored Ali, the cave, the lake and all of the magical wildlife. We saw lots of lizards, rabbits, deer, wild goats and thrillingly, the hind quarters of a lynx as it shot off to hide. We also had an incredible close encounter with 20 Griffon Vultures!
The cave itself is situated so that its easy to visit many beautiful and exciting places within a half hour drive. The lake and mountains are breath-taking. Ali and Max were really welcoming and gave us fantastic advice about places to explore. The cave house itself is really sweet and cosy and it is such deep, delicious, undisturbed sleep you get there. You get absolute silence and pitch darkness. The kids were sleeping amazingly well from day one which meant we did too. The sky at night is star strewn, Ive never been able to see so many. We often sat out at night and had a few beers, lounged around reading in the very cosy kitchen during the hottest part of the day and went exploring in the afternoons. If you want peace and tranquility, stunning views, a gorgeous lake to swim in and free delicious tapas with every glass of ice-cold beer in all of the bars and restaurants, if you want time with your family, no distractions and proper sleep, youve just found your ideal holiday. Just make sure you pack some powerful mosquito repellant and use it, the little monsters had me for breakfast.

All my husband and I wanted was a secluded hideaway somewhere warm, and we got so much more! The pictures dont do the cave justice its just stunning and we came away totally in love with the andalucian hills. Freila is the sleepiest town Ive ever been to, so its not for you if you like your creature comforts and 24/7 lifestyle, but from the welcome basket containing bread, lovely herb oil and red wine, right through to the invitation to help yourselves from their veg/herb patch, Alison and Max were exceptional hosts. Theyll disappear if you want your privacy, but we really enjoyed having them over for dinner and trying Maxs tagellas (sp?!). Youll be lost without a car, but theyll take you up to the beautiful Sierra de Baza and beyond in their landrover for a very modest fee, where you can explore ice caves and mines and take in the stunning scenery. Just down the road you have the tranquil lake or the more buzzy campsite with pool (the french chef does a mean steak) if youre not the type to be off having adventures every day. Us - we loved just pottering around the gorgeous cave, cooking and relaxing and totally recharging. Id recommend the house for anyone looking for something special, away from it all. Thanks Ali and Max for a wonderful, amazing time.

Thank you for making our stay really confortable and memorable, we are so glad we found Cueva Alfano. The peace and scenery were everything we could have wished for and our 4x4 excursions with Max were very special. The landscape is so varied from desert to alpine, plain to lake, olive groves...and everything about this area is beautiful. I'm so glad that we found some climbing routes too, that was a bonus! Enjoyed Duncan, Sancho and Ruben, they are real characters. Sad things is - we did'nt stay long enough but that just means we should come again. Keep in touch eh? Lots a love Clare xx Muchas gracias! It was a very interesting stay. My cave bedroom was very confortable...if a little dark in the morning - I could have slept all day! The adventures with Max were amazing and I loved the chats with him, trying to understand each other was great fun. Hope to see you again soon x Chilli x Dear Ali and Max, Thank you for a peaceful, exciting, comfortable and memorable stay. Also thanks to your neighbour for arranging last minute additional asccomodation. The time has gone too fast, but hope to be back. Finally, special "grazie" to Max for the off-roading, local knowledge and entertaining the crazy boys (Joe and Ross)! Adios, Frank x Dear Max and Alison, had a wonderful time in the cave house. The days out with Max were so much fun, and your company and knowledge were greatly appreciated. I have lots of pictures, so I will send them to you once I'm home. Hope to see you again in the future, Helen x

Ali, Max, ‘The three Muskateers’ (Sancho, Duncan, Ruben)! Once again, thank you for a wonderful holiday in Cueva Alfano. His knowledge and experience of the terrain ensures you will see fantastic views and experience a drive of a life time! Really enjoyed our last evening where you dared to taste our ‘Jambalaya’ –which we hope you enjoyed. Great to meet Angie too-who we hope can help us to improve our Español (and you too Ali)! Alison and Max, ¡Muchisimas gracias por todo! We’ve had a truly wonderful time in Cueva Alfano and will be heartily recommending this little slice of heaven to friends and family in Abu Dhabi. We really enjoyed your attentive yet unobtrusive hospitality, fantastic suggestions about how to enjoy the local area and wonderful lamb marinade! Thanks so much to both of you and the exuberant Sancho, Ruben and Duncan for showing us a great time. We look forward to seeing you all again in the not-too-distant future, ensha ’allah! Hi Ali and Max, Ruth and I have just returned to the UK and have had a wonderful holiday in Andalucia; Cueva Alfano has been an excellent base to explore from and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Hopefully you are having a good time too. Everything was in order when we left early this morning and we left the keys in the agreed place. Your dogs have been very friendly – they love company don’t they? We had a couple of days where we didn’t travel far and they were welcome companions and even enjoyed a walk down to the lake side with us! You didn’t tell us if you had named them, so we called them Basil and Sybil….. We also met John on one occasion, when he came to check on their food and water. We had also been regularly checking their water and this morning, before we left, the dogs had plenty. As promised, I have put many of the pictures that I have taken over the last couple of weeks on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/92621184@N00/sets/72157634103833877/ At the moment there are around 30 pictures, but could well be more in the future as I find the time to properly go through them. You are welcome to use any for your website or marketing if you like them. I can email you web resolution or much higher if required. However I’m not sure I can compete with Max’s excellent pictures or location knowledge! Specialist photography holidays (incorporating expert photographer and guide) are becoming very popular for individuals and small groups. Your area of Andalucia is stunning and would be ideal should you ever go down that route. Thanks again to you two (and Basil and Sybil) for a great couple of weeks. Gordon and Ruth

Ali, Max and Claudia, Thank you for being wonderful hosts. The cave exceeded all our expectations, it's amazing. Also a very big thankyou to Max for retrieving us from the bar on Friday night - you saved us from a long stagger home and treated us to an exciting rally! (The boys loved it!). Your spicy popcorn was great too and has left us wondering how you made it! We are certainly planning to return. Thanks again.
