The Area
La Ribera del Gaidovar is an historical enclave, nestled in the Natural Park and close to the town of Grazalema. For centuries, the flour mills and olive oil mills of the Ribera of this river have been operating, when the area was quite populated and there were still rural schools. At the end of the 20th century, the activity of the last mill of Ribera ceased. Other buildings that can be seen in the valley are small farms and bodegas, ( the area was a major wine producer up to the end of the 19 century).
Grazalema is a beautiful and small white village of the Sierra de Cadiz, which retains much of its architecture and traditional ways of life. It is located in a privileged enclave within the Natural Park with a diverse fauna and flora and unforgettable landscapes. A small town, with an original architecture very well preserved and very interesting anthropologically, such as the Toro de Cuerda in July, or the historical recreation of "Los Bandoleros", near the end of September.
The gastronomy, very natural, is based on local products, Payoyo cheese being one of the best in Spain, the Iberian pig raised in freedom, pata negra, as well as the consumption of game, partridge, deer, rabbit and so on.
Of interest are the ecological oils and wines made in the mills and nearby wineries and the leather work that is made in the neighbouring town of Ubrique.
Activities
In winter the snow arrives to Grazalema for a couple of days and it creates a beautiful white landscape. Autumn and spring are the best times to hike through the numerous routes that link the white villages. There are specialized companies for horse riding, hang-gliding or cycling. Archaeological, oenological and gastronomic visits can also be made. In summer the nights are cheerful and fresh with numerous terraces open until well into the night. There are many places to swim and refresh, the Municipal Pool, Arroyo Molino, El Pantano, not to mention the nearby coast of Malaga and Cadiz. There is also a growing interest in cycling and in one of the nearby villages one can hire good quality touring and mountain bikes
How to get around
We have four airports nearby: Malaga, Seville, Gibraltar and Jerez de la Frontera
Grazalema is only 30kms from Ronda, a monumental and romantic town, whose visit is obligatory and in its surrounding area are small wineries of the most sought-after wines of the Sierra. There are two daily buses to Malaga that pass through Ronda.
Seville, Cadiz and Malaga, are approximately 2 hours away. By car.
The centuries-old wineries of Jerez de la Frontera and its famous Andalusian Horses are only an hour away.
