Information about the Village:
Kalyvos is a village in the district of Mylopotamos. It is 37 km. southeast from Rethymnon. It is built at an altitude of 570 m and has 399 inhabitants, who are engaged in olive cultivation, viticulture and animal husbandry.
It owes its name to the huts, the first houses of the village that were built at a high altitude. to avoid the Turks. During the years of the Turkish occupation it was called Panochori and later Nea Axos and this because it was at a short distance (5-6 km) from Axos.
The village must have existed during the Venetian occupation, as evidenced by the battlements found in the Rapane gorge. Perhaps it also existed in Byzantine times.
Older families are the Kozoronides, the Nikiforis, the Tsaggarakides, the Lyronides, the Sopasoudakides, the Spanoudakides, the Koinides.

In the village there is also the mountain Porofokas, which was named so, according to the stories of the inhabitants, from a battle fought by a certain Phokas against the Arabs, or from the fact that Nikiforos Phokas passed through there. However, there is another toponym Poro-Fokas, from the well-known emperor of Byzantium, who conquered Crete from the Arabs.

In the Arkadius holocaust, three people from the village were executed in Vourno-lakos. The inhabitants have always been characterized for their heroism and combativeness, while they are distinguished, like most Cretans, because they are revelers and maracles.

Tsoupa cave has stalagmites and stalactites with lots of water. It is even said that in the past, a rooster was put inside and he climbed around 500 m and came out at a point on the mountain. It is also said that old icons were found here that do not exist today. Probably the Christians hid them here to save them from the Turks.
The village has two gorges, Rapane Gorge, where the battlements were found, and Machis Gorge, which is opposite Rapane.
The churches of the village are: the two-aisled church of Michael the Archangel and Saint Charalambous. It is the central church of the village. In the nave where Saint Charalambos is worshiped, there is the date of its construction,The iconostasis of the church of Michael the Archangel is carved in wood and its columns are decorated with fine carving.
The church of the Dormition of the Virgin is newly built. There is also a tradition which mentions that during the Turkish occupation, a warrior called Pentakosarhos lived here.
