When you want to explore the area, the charming Cretan village of Atsipopoulo is just a short walk away.
There, you can stock up on necessities at supermarkets and shops, or sample local cuisine at one of the restaurants. Alternatively, drive 2 kilometres to Rethymno city, which has a historic Venetian castle, a picturesque harbour, and a charming old town with bougainvillea-draped cobblestone streets.

The villa is located in the traditional village of Atsipopoulo on the popular Greek island of Crete.
With its old buildings and friendly atmosphere, it exudes laid-back charm.
Local shops, supermarkets, and tavernas are only a few minutes' walk from the villa.
Atsipopoulo is also 5 kilometres from Rethymno, a charming north-coast town with its Venetian citadel of Fortezza, Venetian Harbour, and Old Town.
The harbour is lined with tavernas, bars, and restaurants and is filled with colourful fishing boats. Look for freshly caught seafood or traditional Greek dishes like souvlaki (tender meat cuts) and moussaka.

Get your fix at the Rethymno Lighthouse (built in 1830) or learn about traditional life at the Historical and Folklore Museum, which features local crafts such as textiles and ceramics.
Visit Arkadiou Street's beautiful Venetian mansions or unwind with a coffee at one of the cafés.
You won't have to walk far either to get to the beach, which is right in the heart of town.
Rethymno beach is a 12-kilometer stretch of soft sand with shallow swimming waters.
A promenade surrounds it, and it's just across the street from shops, cafés, and restaurants for when you get hungry during the day.
There are also beautiful turquoise waters at the nearby beaches of Skinaria, Ammoudi, and Damnoni, all of which are close to Plakias village (about 30km south of Rethymno).
The Sacred Monastery of Arkadi is about a 30-minute drive from Rethymno if you want to venture further afield.
The holy site is a tranquil haven of golden stone structures and flower-filled courtyards.
You can walk through fields and meadows to the village of Pikris and have lunch there.
