The splendid farmhouse of L’Oliveraie is set amidst stunning hills and vineyards between St-Remy de Provence (9km) and Mausanne Les Alpilles (4km) in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region of southern France.x000D

The nearby village is one of the country’s acclaimed  ‘plus beaux villages’, a picturesque grey stoned medieval village in a spectacular position in the mountains of Les Alpilles, set on a rocky outcrop and crowned with a ruined medieval castle overlooking the plains to the south. Explore the pretty squares, narrow cobbled streets and little shops, then wander around the fortified-chateau. There are some beautiful walking trails around the village and beyond or simply head to the surrounding vineyards and olive groves to sample some of the fine produce of the region. x000D

Nearby Mausanne (4km) has more than 37,000 olive trees and is one of the most important olive oil producing areas in France – don’t miss sampling the oil which is some of the best in the country, produced by its two remaining windmills. It’s especially good on goat’s cheese with a slice of tomato to make a true “Péché Mignon”! Before leaving the village, enjoy a game of tennis or a spot of horse riding.x000D

Take the car along the twisting thickly forested road to St-Rémy de Provence (9km) and marvel at the incredible rock formations road cut through the rocks, as if sliced by a giant’s knife. Famous artist Vincent Van Gogh was hospitalised in St Remy for over a year at the old asylum of St Paul de Mausole. Artists are still resident here and on selected Sundays during the summer months, the ‘Route des Artistes’ fills with local artists showing off their work creating a wonderful and bustling atmosphere. x000D

The town is also famous for its many restaurants, from down to earth bistros found on pretty narrow streets to Michelin starred establishments. Gastronomers, look out for the Wednesday and Saturday morning markets with their anchovies, olives and wild herbs. Wine aficionados can easily arrange private tours and tastings at the vineyards in the surrounding countryside. The Alpilles museum offers fascinating information about the area and its heritage while Musée Estrine commemorates Van Gogh as well as showcasing other regional artistsx000D

While you are in the area, the nearby archaeological site of Glanum (8km) is well worth a visit. It was dug and rediscovered in 1921 exposing the great buildings that characterised the cities of Imperial Rome. x000D

Eygalières (21km) in Les Alpilles Natural Park is another one of the prettiest spots in Provence, a small hill-top village with winding lanes and stunning views , home to many celebrities seeking refuge from the paparazzi. The park itself provides plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities such as rock climbing with hiking, horse riding and mountain biking popular on the many marked trails. Nature lovers will enjoy its biodiversity and abundance of resident bird species.x000D

Gordes (46km) is yet another one of the beautiful villages worth visiting, set in the Luberon region and surrounded by those iconic lavender fields in the summer months. If you adore the sight and smell of lavender a visit to Un Mas en Provence (39km) will delight your senses and explain how the relaxing scent is produced. x000D

Don’t miss the lively city of Avignon (34km) during your stay. Explore its winding medieval streets, visit the two UNESCO world heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge. The covered market offers all sorts of delights or head to the weekend farmers, flower and flea markets for wonderful local produce and a bargain or two. For warm summer evenings of culture there is a theatre in Avignon and Opera lovers should book early for the July Festival in Aix en Provence (72km)

Arles (28km) is also a fantastic city to visit, with a rich historical past and well known for its incredible architecture and fascinating Roman remains. It is also famous for its connection to Vincent Van Gogh who managed to paint over 500 works during his relatively short time in his much beloved city. Travel further east in the direction of the wild grey horses and pink flamingos of the Camargue Regional Park (38km). The park offers a huge range of activities including cycling, hiking, riverboat trips, horse riding and birdwatching.
